Serial Sex Offender Gets Probation


     A gross miscarriage of justice. That's the only way to describe what happened on November 12th, 2021. Cody Kozicki's is a case I have been reporting on all year. He was arrested in November 2019 for sending pictures of his genitals to three elementary school children after school officials refused to intervene when he sent similar unsolicited pictures to dozens of girls between the ages of 11 and 17. He jumped bond four times over the course of these two years, meaning he faced a combined total of seven felony charges that could have put him in prison for 34.5 years. He pleaded guilty to two of these felonies and ultimately could have been put in prison for nearly a decade.

     Instead, he received 90 days in jail, which he had already served when he was unable to make bail for the bond jumping charges, followed by eight years of probation. It's not all bad news. He will spend the rest of the decade on probation with two years in prison hanging over his head if he violates it; given that he jumped bond four times, the chance that this happens is likely. He is also a convicted felon who will be unable to go to college or even finish high school. Part of his probation is a ban on unsupervised contact with children; try explaining that to any girlfriend or wife one might hope to have before the age of 30. He must also pay thousands of dollars in fines, fees, and reparations.

     Now comes the important part: he is currently undergoing evaluation by counselors. These evaluations will be used to determine whether Kozicki has to register as a sex offender for 10 years, 25 years, life, or not at all. This is the most feared punishment for being a sex criminal, and it is one Kozicki both deserves and qualifies for. I will update you if he gets rearrested or if a final determination on his sex offender status is made. This needs to be his legacy. Let's help spread his name around a bit:

     Matthew Clifton Cogburn was born on July 22nd, 1984, in Gray, Georgia, where he was raised and ultimately spent his life. Apparently, his childhood was fairly normal for a kid in Georgia: he spent eight years flattening out a pile of dirt near his home, enjoyed playing with LEGOs, was an average student in school, and was raised as a very religious child, attending church camps every summer. He graduated Jones County High School in 2002. Around 2004, he began chatting with strangers online, later attributing it to "undiagnosed OCD," a subpar explanation at best.      Cogburn worked and attended college in 2006, bouncing from apartment to apartment during the school year, and his employer had enough faith in him to actually give the man his job back after a minor setback occurred in the form of Cogburn's appearance on To Catch A Predator in July of that year.
