To Catch A Predator Update: Detroit, Part Two
Jonathan David Doebler received a sentence of 1-20 years in prison with sex offender registration until at least 2033. I know little about him, but, judging by the fact that he was still in prison when his conviction was posted, he served at least 2 years before being released.
David Benton Smith tried to plead guilty for a 6-month sentence, but his plea was refused and he faced trial. He entered a new plea deal and received 16 months to 10 years in prison with lifetime registration as a sex offender. As his registration is lifetime, I don't know how long he served, but it was likely more than 3 years as he was charged with 6 felonies. He lives in Albion, Michigan.
Johnny Ray Stanley was a very sick man, even though he didn't show up. He began asking a child if she had had sex within 2 minutes and continued sending sexual pictures and messages for over 2 months. He pled guilty and received 30 days in jail, probation until 2013, and RSO status until 2033, a year which he will likely not live until.
Gaurav Goyal and Chandram Pilli were the only 2 men to not be convicted in the Wayne County sting (out of 43), and that is because they both absconded to India early in the criminal justice process and have yet to return.
Kyle Frankhouse was charged as a youthful offender and received a year in jail with 2 years of probation and extensive sex offender counseling. He has yet to reoffend, a brighter side to his less-than-stellar sentence, and he lives in Matthews, North Carolina.
Corey Dingman chatted, masturbated, and sent porn alongside pictures of his young daughter. He received 6 months in jail and remained on probation until 2014. He lives in Taylor, Michigan, and he must register as a sex offende runtil at least 2034.
Marino Nicholas Apollinari was convicted in September 2008 and sentenced to 1-20 years in prison. I was oddly unable to find his sex offender registry, as it was a part of his sentence, but he served at least 2 years before his release. He is 44 and lives in Greater Detroit.
Eric Skulsky's case was a gross miscarriage of justice. He chatted with 19 decoys and was taken into custody by Wayne County. His chats were blatantly sexual, but twice the jury was hung because "they didn't want to ruin a young man's life." Since when is 28 a "young man," and since when is soliciting a child half your age anyone's fault but your own? He pled guilty to a felony to avoid a third trial and received 2 years probation. He moved to Connecticut, where they give each felon a medal, and opened a pediatric dentistry office that has allowed him into contact with a large number of children he could victimize. The worst part? He had a child porn charge dropped, and he is not registered as a sex offender.
Steven John Klanke was a vile predator who expressed a desire to watch his son have sex and to hide a spy camera in the shower and even mentioned putting on a condom said son had used. He was sentenced to 1-20 years in prison and registration as a sex offender. He lives in Hillsdale, MI.
Richard William Shaw was sentenced to 18 months to 20 years in prison and released in 2010 after serving just over 25 months. He will be registered as a sex offender until 2035, and he lives in Taylor, Michigan.
James Patrick Finn III was convicted of a federal charge of receipt of child pornography after the Detoit investigation and spent 6 years in prison before his 2014 release. He must register as a sex offender until 2029. He lives in Morley, Michigan, but recently failed to verify his address. He faces 1-10 extra years in prison.
Scott Spears had a sexual chat with a minor and spent 6 months in the county jail in Kalamazoo with 5 years of probation. It may not have been the strongest sentence (he did not have to register as a sex offender), but it certainly dissuaded him from reoffending.
Scott Wayne Looney masturbated (not just the normal way) on camera and only received 3 years probation. Another man who didn't have to register as a sex offender, but he learned that just because you don't leave your house doesn't mean you're safe, in Michigan at least.
Scott Anthony Lane chatted with 2 different decoys from 2 different counties and was found in possession of child pornography. He was sentenced to 6 months in jail but served a year before being released. He remained on probation until 2012, and he must register as a sex offender for life. He lives in Mount Clemens, Michigan.
