Drunk Driver Predator Sentenced To 15 Years In Prison

Qays "Matt" Mahjoob was born on May 10th, 1982. 5'9" and 185 pounds, he has brown eyes but wore blue contacts to alter their color. He had an affinity for guitar and fast food. He didn't smoke cigarettes and advised the decoy not to (that would be harmful to her), but smoked marijuana on a regular basis.

In August 2006, he hit on another decoy during the time of the sting in Petaluma, California. The decoy was preoccupied, so Qays Mahjoob began chatting with a 13-year-old girl named Willow using the screen name "longbeachdude19," a reference to the fact that he lived 10 minutes away from the sting house and started his AOL account in late 2001 or early 2002. He took his time, asking the girl if she had a boyfriend (she said she broke up with her 15-year-old ex because he was a dick) and discussing fast food during the first chat before getting graphic in the subsequent conversations. He mentioned his fixation with Filipino women and his desire to learn Tagalog before telling the decoy she had a nice rear, stating that he would perform oral sex on her, asking graphic details about her ability to perform oral sex, asking her if she was shaved, stating that he wanted to molest her while she played video games, expressing his desire for sex in a jacuzzi and doggy-style sex, wanting to lick her breasts and buttocks, and on, and on, and on, between September 5th, 2006, and September 8th, 2006.

On the evening of the latter date, he showed up to the sting house. He heard the decoy's walkie-talkie go off and engaged in a series of paranoid phone calls with her, worrying this technical glitch indicated the presence of police, his desire to molest a young girl overcoming his obvious paranoia. When he saw Chris Hansen, he bolted toward the waiting Long Beach Police Department officers. In a state of shock, he refused to follow directions and received a taser shot as a result, nearly splitting his head open on the concrete but ultimately ending up unharmed.

In spite of his history of online chats and the graphic nature of his conversation with Willow, in March 2007 he received a sentence of three years probation, 60 days of CalTrans cleanup, and lifetime registration as a sex offender. He completed his sentence in 2010 and remains registered as a sex offender.

On April 4th, 2013, Mahjoob was driving the wrong way on the freeway and hit an oncoming car that contained a mother and her eight-year-old daughter, both of whom had just left a vacation at Disneyland and both of whom sustained serious bodily injury. He was mildly injured and taken to the hospital by paramedics, where samples of his urine and his blood revealed he had a BAC of 0.22, nearly three times the legal limit. He spent 159 days in jail before his release. Qays Mahjoob was convicted of two felony DUI counts and sentenced to 15 years in prison: four years for the injuries he caused to each victim and seven years because of his prior conviction in the Long Beach sting. He appealed his conviction to the California Appeals Court in April 2016, arguing the medical staff had violated his civil rights by improperly sanitizing their catheters and needles, that the BAC tests were unreliable, and that his prior conviction should not be considered. His verdict and sentence were upheld in their entirety.

Mahjoob is currently incarcerated; he will be eligible for release in 2025. If he is convicted of another serious felony, he faces an automatic sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
